Asbestos pipe lagging removal in Newcastle Upon Tyne
Our team were recently approached by a homeowner in Chapel House, Newcastle Upon Tyne, who was looking to sell their bungalow.
The client contacted us after having an asbestos survey carried out, discovering that the pipework under the floorboards had been insulated with asbestos pipe lagging.
Damaged or disturbed asbestos pipe lagging can pose a significant risk to human health. As it’s often hidden away and can be difficult to recognise, it is regarded as one of the most dangerous Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) and can cause serious and often fatal respiratory illnesses.
Removing asbestos pipe insulation has to be carried out by Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractors (LARCS) under fully controlled conditions. At Henderson Environmental, we have vast experience in the safe removal and disposal of asbestos from domestic and commercial properties. We are fully licensed by HSE, CHAS accredited and ARCA approved.
Before work commenced the Supervisor briefed the Operatives on the Plan of Work (POW). All Operatives then signed the POW to confirm understanding. The Decontamination Unit was set up to ensure that it was fully operational before any works commenced.
The bungalow formed the enclosure. This was sealed using 1000-gauge polythene sheeting, staples, PCL tape, polystyrene slabs and expanding foam and an air management system was put in place to ensure negative pressure was achieved throughout the whole process.
Following a satisfactory smoke test, the asbestos removal works commenced.
An analytical company was present to carry out background air monitoring and personal air monitoring on our employees.
Personal air monitoring during asbestos removal offers several benefits:
Health Protection: Asbestos fibres, when inhaled, can cause serious respiratory issues and even cancer. Personal air monitoring ensures that workers are not exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos fibres during removal, protecting their health.
Risk Assessment: Monitoring air quality provides valuable data for assessing the effectiveness of asbestos removal procedures. If airborne asbestos levels are found to be higher than acceptable limits, adjustments can be made to the removal process to minimise exposure risks.
Worker Safety: By continuously monitoring the air, workers can be promptly alerted if asbestos levels exceed safe limits, allowing them to take necessary precautions such as wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) or temporarily halting removal activities.
Documentation: Personal air monitoring generates detailed records of asbestos levels throughout the removal process. These records can serve as documentation of compliance with regulations and as evidence of efforts to protect worker health in case of legal disputes or claims in the future.
Overall, personal air monitoring carried out by an independent analytical company is a crucial aspect of asbestos removal projects, helping to safeguard the health of workers and the public, ensure regulatory compliance and provide valuable data for risk assessment and documentation.
The job was successful, and all ACMs were removed from the bungalow, allowing the client to put the property on the market with complete peace of mind.
